Chapter ten

“Did you do it?”

“Hm?” he questions, scooping more soup onto the spoon.

“Did you kill Father Keith? Did you crucify him like Jesus on the cross?”

He freezes for a split second before grinning. His black eyes ooze satisfaction, as if I gave him the highest compliment.

“You’re still weak. What a silly question to waste your strength on, Sister Claire,” he coos, pacifying me like a child. He continues feeding me, and I’m too tired, hungry, and dizzy to continue asking questions. I should muster up the strength, but Heath will never give me a straight answer. I forgot he only speaks in mind-bending riddles, innuendos, and lies.

Other questions come to me as I relax against the pillows.

How did he know where I was? Where am I? Does anyone from the convent know where I am? Will he let me leave? How did he know how many days I’d been fasting?

“I’ll get you some more,” he offers, standing to his feet.

“I’ve had enough...thank you.”

He nods and leaves the room, boots trudging across the floor. He returns shortly, and my eyes flick to his silver belt buckle that glints in the darkness. The beams of the moon reflect off it, showcasing it proudly and drawing my eyes to it.

I close my eyes when my head begins to pound, and my stomach protests in discontent from the sudden solid food.

And then I feel it.

My hair. My habit is gone.

I look down at myself.

“You...you undressed me?” I ask accusingly.

Heath smiles and sits at my side with his legs spread, elbows resting on his knees, hands together as if he were praying.

“I didn’t want you to be uncomfortable in that stuffy getup, but don’t worry...I didn’t look,” he confesses. He leans in and cups my face. His thumb strokes my cheek as his eyes dart between mine. “But god, did I want to.”

I look away. “You had no right to do that.”

“What man can resist temptation so great?” He chuckles and shifts to the bed, his presence invading my personal space. I don’t inch away as I should—let’s call it genuine curiosity and willful ignorance. “Count yourself lucky, Sister Claire. If I had been an actual devil, we’d be having a different conversation.”

“I should leave.”

Heath crosses his arms as I gather the sheets to myself, trying to get up.

“You could...” he drawls. “But the way I see it, no one knows where you are. They do know you were fasting. In fact, I bet if you return a few days from now and told everyone you were in the hospital passed out from malnutrition, no one would question it.”

“There is a flaw to your thinking. Iron Wood is a small, tight-knit community. Mother Superior would be informed of my condition and whereabouts if I were in the hospital.”

“I stand corrected—a Good Samaritan then.”

Where is he going with this?

“So?”

He smirks and leans his cheek into his open palm. “So...you can do whatever you want with whomever you want. You’re free, Sister Claire. Isn’t there something you’ve always wanted to do or see without Mother Superior’s watchful eye?”

I swallow.
